A desperate shortage of arable land led the Norse to expand, and in a strategic conjunction with the Salian Franks, established themselves in Normandy, the British Isles, Spain, Southern Italy, Sicily, Russia, Byzantium and the Holy Land. Their success lay in the plague-weakened and administratively disorganized populations of Europe.
